UCSD1!
This is how the UCSD athletics lobby would argue in favor of the UCSD Division 1 sports referendum if it took five minutes to think about it.
I want my university to take full advantage of all of its resources to be the best damn school it can be. UCSD is a beautiful campus with amazing athletic facilities and the beach a closer walk than from my freshman dorm to my 9am DOC class. We have great athletes at UCSD who work their butts off with no scholarships, but their accomplishments fly under the radar because they play tiny schools in Division II. I see baseball and crew teams smashing no-name opponents and a half-empty RIMAC on spirit night. Ascending to D1 will allow the entire school to take pride that our athletes are competing at the highest collegiate level and are a blast to watch. Student-athletes deserve the opportunity to compete against the highest competition on the court as well as in the classroom.
Those who prefer UCSD remain an oversized ho hum perennial winner in Division II say D1 won’t bolster the UCSD brand or generate school spirit. They say it’s too expensive and unfair to vote to increase fees for scholarships. What’s unfair is to deliberately prevent UCSD from competing at the highest level of competition. What’s unfair is to deny student-athletes the opportunity to earn scholarships as they represent their school and earn their degrees. What’s unfair is to not squeeze the highest performance and most pride we can out of our school.
Of course, there is sacrifice involved. Everyone has to sacrifice when something is being built for the community. Sponsors and grants are being collected, but we need student support too. An increase in student fees will help fund our athletic program for future generations. To build a sports powerhouse to match our labs and classrooms. They say it’s not okay to pass a referendum that will incur costs on future students, and now is not the right time. Whenever a vote is taken to fulfill our school’s athletic potential, future students will be supporting it. So when is the right time? The time is now.
UCSD is committed to maximizing excellence in every field. With the D1 referendum we are taking it to the athletic field. So our student-athletes can go out there and show the world what we’re capable of. So the university can operate at full capacity. We can do more with our state of the art campus and exciting athletes. When we move to D1 we will! Vote YES on D1 referendum!
